Tonight we were driving home from an away volleyball game (apparently the first regular-season game that our JV has won in the past 2 years, actually), and we learned a couple interesting things that we thought you would enjoy.
1. As we drove under an overpass, a typical highway overpass, we saw that the shoulder of the highway had been turned into a sort of outdoor gym. Right under the overpass there was work-out equipment that was being put to good to use, maybe by people who like to "stop by the gym" on their way home from work. Not only were people on the equipment, but there was a very rigorous aerobics class going on; an instructor was on a raised platform doing his thing to some loud music and the people were working it....right there under the overpass on a busy highway.
2. We learned that come November, karaoke will become the thing to do. We're not sure why it happens in November, by apparently we'll hear the karaoke bars come alive all hours of the night. Our neighbor is actually a DJ, so he's been known to let the karaoke fly into the wee hours of the night. Definitely something to look forward to - I just wish Kylie was here to enjoy it!
It's been an interesting setting here for us over the past month or so. We are "missionaries" here working in Thailand, yet we rarely have conversations about Jesus Christ with people who don't already know Him. It's been interesting for me to think through our ministry here - we are here to not, necessarily, bring the good news of Jesus Christ to those who don't know it (although that is certainly an ongoing desire), but our main ministry here is to encourage the kids of missionaries and their families: being examples of Christ-followers to them, helping them grow in their faith. We're praying that God is using us and we know He is. Tomorrow night we begin a weekly Bible study with groups of students. Bret will meet with 2 upperclass guys throughout the week, then those guys will lead a group of 7th grade boys in a Wednesday night Bible study. Bret will be at the Wednesday night study, but it will be the guys' role to lead. I will do the same with two upperclass ladies who will then lead a group of 7th grade girls. We're excited to begin intentionally investing in the lives of the students here outside of the school hours. Please pray that we would grow in our witness and example to those kids and that God would grow His kingdom through them. Thank you!
